Singer Serial Number Lookup: How to Date and Identify Your Machine

Singer has recently pulled some of their dating and identification information from their website. Here you can look up your serial number and find out when your Singer Sewing Machine was made as well as what model you have.

In Summary:AD = prefix of serial numbers assigned to the first Featherweights manufactured, beginning in 1933Serial Number prefixes beginning with letter 'A' = manufactured in Elizabethport, New Jersey, USASerial Number prefixes beginning with letter 'E' = manufactured in Kilbowie, Scotland, United KingdomSerial Number prefixes beginning with letter 'J' = manufactured in St. John's, Quebec, Canada(a few were partially manufactured in Kilbowie and then sent to Canada for finishing)Models 221 (or 221-1) = manufactured in Elizabethport, New Jersey, USAModels 221K = manufactured in Kilbowie, Scotland, United KingdomModels 221J = manufactured in St. John's, Quebec, Canada(a few were partially manufactured in Kilbowie and then sent to Canada for finishing)With the exception of motor voltage, belt drive, and some minor cosmetic differences, all 221 models remained fundamentally the same from 1933 through the 1960's. A Featherweight 221 is a 221 is a 221; the suffix does not change or alter the model classification. Moreover, the dash or "-1" indication on some years actually remains unknown. The records contained herein is all that Singer provided and Featherweight historians obtained. You can refer to the Featherweight Historical Timeline for more details about those changes.

Hi, I have 2 Singer Sewing machines one has the serial number G9760381 and the other is H568636 they are complete with tables. how would I be able to find a value on these machines>Thanks, Tom

All Singers up until 1900 have no letter prefix and came from several factories around the world. The company cleverly managed their production from all factories to coincide with the serial number flow. If you fancy a read on the collapse of Singer in Britain have a go at End of Empire.

Very early Singers from the 1850's up until the start of prefix letters in 1900 had two serial numbers. There is a lot of controversy over why there were two lots of numbers. The most likely answer is that the larger number was the total number of machines produced by Singers when they only had a few factories and could keep up with, and control, the production output from Britain and America. They would order machines in batches say, 1,000 or 10,000 from Kilbowie, Elizabethport and elsewhere. The lower number may be the total production/batch run of that particular model range, the larger the overall total number of Singer machines made.

For example, Singer model 99k serial number Y6307577. The 99k denotes model 99 made in(K) for Kilbowie and the serial number Y6307577 gives us the year of manufacture as 1928.

Singers have always been marked with serial numbers ever since production began. Each number is corresponding to a model from a certain date, and even location. All Singer sewing machines up until 1900 have no letter prefix, and came from all around the world. The Singer company eventually managed their production from all their factories to match up with the serial number flow.

Hey mindy..I recently got an antique singer and it also has a serial number that begins with a G followed by 7 numbers. Were able to find anything to help you identify the manufacturing year on yours?

I picked up an old singer at a odd and ends shop. The serial number, which is located on the top under the gold Singer emblem. I do not see it on your chart. The number is AD745900. Is that the serial number and if it is could you tell me the age? It is in beautiful and looks similar to the model on your website above, the one with the red fabric.

I have my mothers Singer sewing machine which is still in very good working order. Its serial number is B381647 and unfortunately when it was recently transported the sliding plate (64mm X 73mm) adjacent the needle assembly was lost, much to my disappointment. I would be grateful if I could replace the plate to bring it back to working order. If someone could please respond to my email on their availability I would be most grateful.

I have a singer sewing machine with a serial number on a plate, which would indicate that it is older. However, the number is preceded by the letter G. Using the chart, I could not determine the age. Could you help me out?

i am trying to find some information about a singer sewing machine. There is a number on it of: AD962240. I am wondering about the age of this machine and a bit about it. Please help me find the information about this machine. Thank you.

Hi Melody,I have a Singer Sewing Machine that I know for a fact was made between 1851 and 1870. I have a file with the serial numbers and since the logs were lost between those years, I know my number is from those years. The serial number is 00491203. The research I did shows if there are no letters in the serial number you can be sure it was manufactured prior to 1900. Just curious of what you think I should do.

Maybe you can help. I bought an old Singer sewing machine as deskmodel. Not these ones mounted in a desk and driven by feet. It is driven by a crank. Now I found your table of the production year where you told that the old machine serial numbers started without a letter. But mine has the following serial number: V616882Do everyone will have an explanation on that? Many thanks for each hint in advance.

I have a singer sewing machine in a cabinet. Still works but a little slow cabinet is in great shape a bit blotchy on top. Seri6 number is JB 577180. Would just like to know the age of it and possible value. Ty

Hi, I have an old singer mannual machine, but everything written on it is whipped off. The only number I can see under is SINGER 173821. Please I would like to know the year of production and it worth.

A detailed list of 221J serial numbers is not available but the Canadian built 221J machines seem to fall within the range JE150000 to JE162000 from 1961. 221J machines made in Kilbowie were given serial numbers allocated to 221K's and fall within the ES873744 to ES883753 series from 1961/62.

If anyone has more detailed knowledge about the manufacture of 221J Featherweight machines, or can extend the serial number ranges, then please let us know so that we can publish it for everyone's benefit.

I'll be verifying my copy of this book one of these days. In the notes you state "Copyright page includes the code "D 1979/0265/306", whose meaning (other than the publication year) the verifier does not understand". The code is explained here, in Dutch of course. In short, the structure of the code is D/JJJJ/XXXX/YY, and is mandatory for anything published in or about Belgium. The D stands for "wettelijk depot" or "dépot legal", JJJJ is the year of publication, XXXX is the code given to the publisher by the Royal Library of Belgium, and YY is the serial number of the publication (for this publisher, in the year of publication). Thus D 1979/0265/306 means this is the 306th publication by "Het Spectrum" in 1979. --Willem 18:04, 28 May 2015 (UTC) 2ff7e9595c
